How will you contribute?

Working closely with Senator Marc Gold, the current Government Representative in the Senate, the Speechwriter will be responsible for creating strategic and policy communications content related to key issues in the Senator’s areas of focus. You will draft meaningful and effective speeches, linking them to current issues, policies and relevant procedures. You will also contribute content to the website of the Government Representative Office. To be successful in this role, you will need to have great understanding of policy and politics in the Senate, and sharp analytical skills, in addition to being a strong team player. The role will include many engaging opportunities, working in proximity to many honourable Senators, Parliamentarians, senior government officials and groups dedicated to various important initiatives across Canada.

Open to

The general public to staff one (1) determinate position in the in the office of the Government Representative in the Senate, Senator Marc Gold.

Prerequisites

• Successful completion of a bachelor’s degree in a relevant field of liberal arts (such as political science), law or possess an acceptable combination of education, training and relevant experience;
• Experience in conceptualizing content, including writing speeches, opinion pieces and news releases for announcements in a political and/or legislative environment;
• Experience writing speeches to be delivered in the Senate chamber and knowledge of the Senate reform initiative launched in 2015 are considered very strong assets;
• Experience in providing strategic policy advice to executive and/or senior officials with the ability to link communications strategies to policies and procedures;
• Strong research, analytical and data synthesizing skills;
• Strategic, organized and creative thinker with the ability to coordinate and multi-task to accomplish a variety of activities with tight timelines;
• Excellent copywriting and editing skills, and the ability to convey breaking news and/or government policy announcements in an effective manner;
• Strong communications skills and ability to work independently, as well as build relationships both within and outside of the Senate;
• Expressive and persuasive in both spoken and written language;
• Knowledge of Senate policies, practices and protocols, and an understanding of the principles underlying governance of the Canadian legislative process;
• Ability to anticipate needs, prioritize tasks and tactfully mobilize resources while maintaining a high level of discretion;
• Applicants are asked to provide two speechwriting samples.


Linguistic Requirements :
