How will you contribute?

The Chief of Operations role exists to ensure that CSG Senators get the services they require in order to function as part of this unique group in the Senate of Canada. Working under the direction of the Leader of the CSG, the Chief of Operations is responsible for recognizing and nurturing opportunities for CSG Senators and their office staff to be partners in the collective operation of the group.

Specific Duties:
• Overall management of the CSG parliamentary and research operations, including managing the office budget and staff;
• Implementing and updating the strategic goals for delivery of services to CSG members in collaboration with CSG members and the Head of Research;
• Providing support and oversight to the planning of research activities of the CSG Research Bureau and its ongoing operation, based on the Senate proceedings as well as the research plan and timelines developed and managed by the Head of Research;
• Liaising with corresponding senior officials in other Senate groups and caucuses, in order to ensure an effective working relationship between the CSG and other groups;
• Building and maintaining strong relations with the Clerk of the Senate and all Senate administration directorates to ensure that CSG members, the CSG Secretariat, and CSG Senators’ offices receive the best advice and support that they need with respect to parliamentary rules and practices, legal matters, procedures, information technology, finance, human resources, security, and communications;
• Ensuring that CSG leadership is timely and properly briefed and advised on all issues that are relevant to the conduct of CSG affairs;
• Liaising with the staff in each CSG Senator’s office to ensure that the maximum value is being delivered to CSG Senators, and that talents and expertise resident in specific Senators offices are being respected and (where appropriate) collectively utilized, such that duplication of effort is not occurring; and
• Coordinate CSG issues management by defining the issues, assessing outcomes and risks, and advising the CSG leadership team and members on options.

Prerequisites

• Successful completion of a university degree in a field related to the position;
• Experience in developing strategies and implementing plans to advance the initiatives of a group;
• Experience in managing, developing, and motivating a group of employees;
• Experience providing in-depth research, a detailed analysis and insightful reports to high level stakeholders to facilitate their decision making;
• Experience in the interpretation and application of rules, regulations and policies;
• Very strong writing skills with the ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing in both official languages;
• The ability to adapt to unforeseen and shifting circumstances and remain objective under pressure or in stressful situations;
• The ability to adapt to a wide array of issues with diplomacy and tact;
• Knowledge of and/or experience working in a legislative and parliamentary environment would be a strong asset;
• Experience managing budgets would be an asset.
